Is Baby Bassinet Safe?
- Updated: April 10, 2017
Nowadays, the number of the family using bassinets using baby bassinet is increasing. Well, bassinet for baby may give some advantages both for the parents and the babies. However, not all of them are made to meet safety standards. Poor-designed baby bassinets can make the babies that are put inside get injured even they can lead to death.
There has been some research reviewing cases of infant deaths involving bassinets. Most of the babies who died were around 2-3 months old. The deaths were not always caused by the poor construction of bassinets but there were findings that show how the bassinets were used also contributed to the problems.
Most infants who died had a lack of oxygen. It was because the bassinets were full of stuff such as pillows, blankets, and even plastic bags. These made the space for babies in the bassinet become smaller. Regarding those problems, it’s recommended for parents or babysitters to always put babies to sleep on their backs. Do not place too many items such as too much bedding and toys inside the bassinets.
It is also important to make sure that the bassinet is working well with no broken salt. Your infant should have a safe environment for sleeping. Even when parents are sure that their baby sleeping area is safe, parents should sleep nearby but not share a room. Parents’ room should be next to or in front of their baby’s room.
If you decide to use a bassinet, there are some points to take into account. First, ensure that the basinet has a durable bottom and smooth surfaces. Second, find a mattress that firmly and tightly fit in the bassinet. Remember that bassinets should not be always expensive and branded. The most important thing is they should have a sturdy construction with adequate safety features and comfortable materials.
